It’s that time of year–the 2012 gear tests. Backcountry Magazine, Powder Magazine, SKI Magazine, Skiing Magazine, Mountain Magazine and Outside Magazine are all putting 2012’s best gear to the test at ski resorts and backcountry playgrounds across the country.

We kicked off Powder Mag’s #powderweek here in Jackson Hole with tons of new snow. Sidecountry reconaissance out of the gates at JHMR produced the goods in Pinedale, Four Pines, and Granite. Photographer Mike Schirf gets into it on the Nordica Radict.

Mike Rogge really loves headbands, powder skiing, and Dynafit’s new Huascaran ski and Vulcan boot.

Nordica’s Patron and Unleashed Hell are perfect for sidecountry missions.

Then, our newest team member and former editor at SKI and Skiing magazines, Sally, headed south to Snowbird for the SKI/Skiing tests. She joined Nordica freeride team manager and ski product coordinator Sam Beck to make sure testers were dialed in on Nordica’s best.

Denny, ink. and Nordica also hosted the first annual Hot Tub Happy Hour at the Cliff Lodge in Snowbird. Pitchers of beer, hot tubs, and sunsets over the Wasatch sure do pair nicely…

Backcountry Magazine’s test is going on at Powder Mountain, Utah. Dynafit sent down a slew of skis, boots, and bindings–the Huascaran and Vulcan on the roster–plus one donkey piñata. Because you can never have too many donkey piñatas.

Drew Pogge, editor of Backcountry mag, also went live on local television with some of his favorite products–the Nordica Hell & Back among them.

Thanks to all the magazines for putting Dynafit and Nordica skis, boots and bindings through the paces. Stay tuned to this fall’s buyers guide for 2012’s best gear.

Jackson Hole-based brand communications firm, Denny, ink, is proud to announce the newest addition to its team, Sally Francklyn, who joins the agency this week as an Account Executive.

Sally Francklyn joins Denny, ink.

No stranger to the industry, Francklyn comes to Denny, ink having spent the past several years as web editor for Skiing and SKI magazines, where she produced daily editorial, photo, and video content for the online properties.

Yet, the opportunity to live, ski and—of course—work in Jackson Hole was too good for Francklyn to pass up, so she packed her car last week and headed north where, when she’s not sniffing out the best powder snow, will manage several brands on the Denny, ink. client roster – including Nordica Skis & Boots and Powderhorn Apparel.

Born and raised in the Rocky Mountains, Sally is a true Colorado native. Her love for the ski industry began as an intern at Skiing Magazine while a student at the University of Colorado at Boulder. After graduation, she nimbly moved between roles in public relations and social content marketing before being hired back at Skiing and SKI magazines.

“Honestly? We’re still in awe that Sally has chosen to come and work with us, we feel so lucky to have her,” said Chris Denny, of Denny, ink. “Sally shares that same passion and enthusiasm for the sports we represent and with her diverse industry background and her experience in social networking and website management she’s going to be a powerful addition to our team. Plus, she absolutely shreds.”

About Denny, ink.
Based in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Denny, ink. is a full-service public relations agency that specializes in developing integrated brand communication and new media programs for companies in the outdoor, snowsports and action sports industries.

Boulder, CO (October 2011) – Salewa and Dynafit North America, the wholly owned subsidiary of Salewa International, announced as a huge success their cross-town move into a new headquarters building. Salewa’s new address is 1711 15th Street, 2nd Floor, Boulder, CO 80302. The office was previously located at 4730 Walnut Street #200, Boulder, CO 80301.

“Our North American business has grown 500+% since 2007, so growing the size of our workspace by 150+% was clearly necessary. Our new headquarters not only accommodates our rapid expansion with state-of-the-art technology and brand showcases, it also provides an environment to support and further grow the unique-and-focused culture around our brands” said Chris Sword, President of Salewa North America.

The North American subsidiary was established in 2007, and has since scaled up the team and the support structure rapidly to accommodate and accelerate the high growth of the Dynafit and Salewa brands, along with the recent acquisition of the Pomoca brand. The new office is located near the heart of bustling downtown Boulder – A “stones throw” away from Boulder Creek, the central Boulder bike path, local climbing gyms, as well as all the natural rock and mountain access that Boulder has to offer.

“Everyone is thrilled to move into our new office,” stated Keith Patterson, Director of Sales and Marketing. “The move will allow our team to maintain and even increase our reputation for customer service in today’s rapidly-growing outdoor market by increasing-and-improving our space and upgrading our in-house technology.”

The design of the new office space reflects Salewa and Dynafit’s collaborative culture as part of its commitment to provide excellent client service. The new office features an open floor plan that brings in natural light to enhance the feeling of spaciousness in the overall layout. The space includes numerous internal and external teaming areas, including wireless LAN, dedicated showrooms boardrooms for client meetings, and a full-scale warranty/repair/demo gear facility.

###

The North American headquarters is the wholly owned subsidiary of Salewa International, based in Bolzano, Italy. Salewa International is a family-owned Italian-based business with operations around the world. The North American business runs the USA/Canada sales, operations, marketing, distribution, and service for the premier alpine brand Salewa (based in Bolzano, Italy), and three of the world’s preeminent backcountry ski brands, Dynafit and silvretta (based in Munich, Germany), and Pomoca (based in Aubonne, Switzerland).

An independently owned business based in Buford, Georgia, Exotac was started in 2010 by Purdue Engineering graduate, Rob Falkenhayn, who’s passion for all things man and earth made has resulted in an impressively functional and aesthetic product collection. Melding a penchant for sleek, sexy design with a dedication to creating the highest-quality products, the core of Exotac is in its engineering.

“Exotac is what happens when engineers and guys-who-love-the-outdoors are combined,” said Rob Falkenhayn, founder and president. “All of the products we’ve designed have been self mandated in our quest to have the best gear out there that works when you need it to. So we combined some metal with a little dirt and the rest is history!“

One of the company’s marquee products is its nanoSTRIKER – a compact ferrocerium and tungsten carbide firestarter.

Sparing no expense and making absolutely no compromises when it came to product design and manufacturing quality. Falkenhayn set out to create a product that was high quality, ultra-small in size and completely self-contained, and the nanoSTRIKER is the result. Sacrificing neither form nor function, its unique all-in-one design puts all the tools you need to start a fire into one tiny package and at the end of the day, this little tool can be collapsed and returned to key-chain ballast duty.

“One of the best features of the nanoSTRIKER is its compactness,” said Falkenhayn. “You really can take it with you anywhere and know that you’ll be able to ease your worries if you find yourself without fire, lost in the woods or simply need to light your camping stove.”

To see a demo of the nanoSTRIKER and the rest of the Exotac product collection, please stop by Exotac in the Outdoor Retailer New Products Pavilion Booth #PV339

At every Outdoor Retailer show, we literally see hundreds if not thousands of products. But of everything we saw, fondled, paddled, submerged, and manhandled, your Pro Gaiter product was a clear stand-out. After our team of almost a dozen editors and contributors combed the floor, following up on countless leads, we’d meet at the end of each day to compare notes and make our final decisions. Competition was stiff.

As you know, product designers in the outdoor industry are a remarkably innovative and forward-thinking bunch. Driven by the desire to provide the user with a safer and more fun experience, they’re constantly rethinking the way we interact with the product and environment.

The winning products are as novel as they are eclectic: because there are such a wide range of products debuted at each show, and because our readers have a similarly diverse spectrum of outdoor interests, we decided to keep the parameters of the award open-ended. It could be that we’ve never seen anything quite like it, or that it was so well-conceived and designed that we simply couldn’t wait to get our hands on it and try it out. In the end, we gave the Salewa Pro Gaiter product our seal of approval for one simple reason: it was one of the most exciting products we saw at this year’s show.
